The Evolution of PTAB Trial Practice Since the AIA:  A Celebration of the 10-Year Anniversary of the RMRO

The PTAB Bar Association, in collaboration with the Rocky Mountain Regional Office of the USPTO (“RMRO”), invites you to join us for a special event in Denver, Colorado, on August 22, 2024, in conjunction with the 10-year anniversary of the RMRO.  This three-part celebration will bring together current and former USPTO judges and stakeholders, and feature programming at the RMRO and Colorado Bar Association, as we explore the evolution of the RMRO and PTAB practice over the last decade.

The day will include the following events – attendees may choose to attend one, two, or all three sessions:

Part One:  Begin the day with the option to attend a live PTAB Oral Hearing at the RMRO from 9:00am-12:00pm (MT).  To register, please email the Rocky Mountain Regional Office at rockymountain@uspto.gov.  Seating in the hearing room will be limited to the first 20 registrants; however, overflow rooms will be available to view the hearing for anyone interested in attending.  


Part Two:  Join us for lunch and the opportunity to hear from Chief Judge Scott Boalick, Vice Chief Judge Melissa Haapala, and Judges Kristina Kalan and James Arpin as we explore the evolution of PTAB trial practice from the perspective of PTAB judges:

12:15-2:30pm (Rocky Mountain Regional Office at 1961 Stout Street, 2nd Floor) (limited to first 50 registrants)
  • Lunch and Keynote Address from PTAB Chief Judge Boalick, with opening remarks by RMRO Director Molly Kocialski (12:15-1:15pm)
  • Panel discussion on the evolution of PTAB Trials practice and insights into current PTAB Trials Practice from the APJ perspective—a discussion with Vice Chief Judge Haapala, Judge Kalan, and Judge Arpin, moderated by Faegre Drinker partner and Vice Chair of the PTAB Bar Association Joel Sayres (1:30-2:30pm)
 
Part Three: Complete the afternoon at the Colorado Bar Association with a panel discussion on the evolution of the patent law practice since the AIA (CLE credit is available for this session):  

3:30-6:00pm (Colorado Bar Association at 1290 Broadway, Suite 1700) (limited to first 100 registrants; CLE credit available)
  • Panel discussion on how the practice of patent law has changed since the America Invents Act was enacted, featuring:
    • Former USPTO Director Andrei Iancu
    • Former USPTO Deputy Director Russ Slifer
    • Former USPTO Commissioner for Patents Robert (“Bob”) Stoll
    • Moderated by Gene Quinn, President and CEO of IPWatchdog
  • Following the panel discussion, there will be closing remarks by RMRO Director Molly Kocialski and a networking reception
